Saturday Afternoon Rhyme

A cheeseburger with extra pickles and a blue bottle of gin

I do eat meat but only total iced tea

I keep the bottle and spill the knock me down into the sea

A gift for the sailors’ ghosts that makes them grin

*

A bottle of nail enamel in princess pink

A knitted holiday sweater to wear in the cold

In green red and white with blinking lights so bold

A hat with fur trim that’s not real but fake mink

*

Mac and cheese and hot dogs and apple pie

Only for a treat every five years

It’s good to keep away blood sugar fears

But once a year maybe a pastrami on rye

*

For no calories try an excellent book

A Sayer’s a Christie a Rex Stout mystery

Or The Name of the Rose a tale with history

Find a comfy and cozy nook

*

Maybe read sitting under a favorite tree

An oak a maple or a sturdy spruce

Perhaps read to a squirrel they’re clever not obtuse

Don’t sit too long if you have a bum knee
